It has finally begun. The FIFA World Cup 2026 Third Ticket Sales Phase (Lottery).
If you are gripping your phone thinking you need to apply immediately before tickets sell out, please wait just a moment. Put your phone down and take a deep breath.
The first thing to know is that this third phase is NOT first-come, first-served. The window runs from December 11, 2025 to January 13, 2026. Whether you apply on day one or the last day, your odds are exactly the same.
In fact, patience is essential right now. The application forms contain critical mistakes that can cost you your prize or even bar you from the venue. If you do not understand how the process works, you may accidentally waste opportunities that were rightfully yours.
I personally went through the entire application process and reviewed the official rules. Based on that firsthand experience, I will explain the offensive actions to maximize your winning chances and the defensive actions to absolutely avoid.

The Bottom Line: These 6 Actions Will Determine Your Outcome
For those short on time, here is the bottom line first. What truly matters in this ticket battle comes down to the following3 offensive moves and 3 defensive moves.
Offensive Actions to Boost Your Winning Chances
Move 1: Apply Through Both the General Slot and the Supporter Slot
Move 2: Accept the Downgrade Option
Move 3: Team Up with Friends, Not Family
Defensive Actions to Avoid Instant Disqualification
Pitfall 4: Ensure Your Credit Card Limit in Advance
Pitfall 5: Strictly Follow the Household Limit
Pitfall 6: Always Select Standard Seats
Why are these so important? Let me explain each one in order.
1. [Offense] Three Winning Moves to Maximize Your Chances
Move 1: Use Both Routes for a Double Entry
This lottery has two entry paths. The General slot (RSD) covers all matches regardless of nationality, while the Supporter slot (PMA) is for fans of specific teams like the Japan national team.
The key point is that you canapply to both at the same time. If you are targeting Japan's matches, limiting yourself to only the Supporter slot would be a huge missed opportunity.Applying through both the General and Supporter slotsis the simplest and most effective approach.
Note: Each account can get up to 4 tickets per match, so groups of 3+ cannot double-dip. In that case, apply via the Supporter path only, which likely has better odds. (Splitting 2 tickets each between General and Supporter paths works.)
The left image shows the Supporter Premier Tier (equivalent to Category 1), and the right shows the General Category 1. Prices are the same, so the seats are probably similar. However, the Supporter path guarantees seating among Japanese fans, while the General path offers no such assurance even at Category 1.

Move 2: Check the Downgrade Option
During the application, a checkbox appears for Accept ticket downgrade". This means you are saying: even if my preferred category is full, please consider me for a lower category if seats are available. Without this checked, you are immediately rejected once your chosen category fills up. Unless you have a strong preference for seat type, this is essential. (It is very likely you will not win Category 1, and if you do win but cannot pay, you can use the official resale.)

Move 3: Team Up with Friends, Not Family (Sit Together)
Applying multiple times from the same household carries too much risk for reasons explained below. Instead,a friend from a different householdis your best partner. Use the Sit Together feature to link your applications, and if either of you wins, you can sit together.
2. [Defense] Three Pitfalls That Will Instantly Disqualify You
Pitfall 4: Check Your Credit Card Limit (Payment Trap)
One person applies through the General slot, the other through the Supporter slot. This doubles your chances without violating the rules. If both win, use the official resale for the extra tickets. If you win the lottery, automatic payment processingbegins. If the payment fails due to exceeding your credit card limit, there is no second chance, and your win will most likely be revoked. Make sure to check your card limit now and request an increase if needed.
The most dangerous pitfall is the household restriction.
Pitfall 5: Strictly Follow the Household Limit (Duplicate Trap)
According to the rules, each household is limited to one General application plus one Supporter application. Even if spouses use different names, the same address means the same household. If flagged as a duplicate, both accounts risk being invalidated.
Pitfall 6: The Display Trap
Accessibility seats and hospitality packages use a completely different interface. If you select them by mistake on the standard screen, it could cause issues. Always make sure you are choosing Standard Seats.

3. The Realistic Strategy I Used This Time
Our primary target is the biggest group stage match, the Netherlands game (June 14, Dallas). So my friend and I each applied throughboth the General and Supporter slotsfor Category 1, maximizing our chances with a total of four entries (same for the Tunisia match).
I also applied through the Supporter slot for knockout stage matches on a go-if-we-can basis (the Round of 16 in particular looks doable as a weekend trip). If Japan gets eliminated before that, you get an automatic refund with only a $10 fee. For any duplicates from the General slot, I will use the official resale. The basic approach is to be aggressive while keeping an exit strategy.
Summary
This ticket battle is not just about luck. What separates winners from losers isthe right knowledge and advance preparation.
Move 1: Double entry
Move 2: Accept downgrade
Move 3: Partner with friends
Pitfall 4: Secure your card limit
Pitfall 5: Follow the household rule
Pitfall 6: Choose standard seats
These6 actionsif executed thoroughly, mean you have done everything you can. The application deadline isJanuary 13. Do not rush, but prepare thoroughly.

If You Are Going to Dallas, Should You Also Aim for Other Big Matches?
If you plan to stay in Dallas for a few days around the Japan match (June 14 vs Netherlands), other exciting matches at the same stadium are worth targeting too (I personally do not plan to stay). Looking at the schedule, big matches like England vs Croatia are also planned for Dallas. If you are already going to be there, applying for these through theGeneral slot at the same timecould take your trip to the next level.

Warning: The General Ticket Application Process Has a Pitfall
The General slot interface is a bit unfriendly. If you select one match and press Continue right away, that single match gets locked inand you cannot add more matches (one application per account).
The correct procedure is:
Select a ticket, then instead of proceeding to payment, scroll down and add the next match. Add all your matches first, then press Continue only once at the end..
I actually made this mistake once and had to reset using Cancel Application (you can reset within the application period).
Thoughts on Pricing
This round does not use dynamic pricing. Looking into it,
Japan group stage matches are Category 1 at $450-$600, Category 3 at $140-$220 which is standard for a World Cup. On the other hand, the opening match (USA/Mexico) is $2,355 to $2,735 (roughly 350,000 to 400,000 yen) which is in a league of its own. The bottom line is,aside from the opening match, prices are not that extreme..
No Netherlands Supporter Slot? And the Tempting Forbidden Move
Looking at the application screen, there is oddly no Netherlands Supporter slot (PMA). Meanwhile, Japan and Tunisia both have Supporter slots. In theory, you could apply through the Tunisia Supporter slot as a workaround, but that would take seats from genuine supporters, which is a matter of etiquette. I decided togo with the straightforward approach: Japan slot plus General slot.

Thank you very much. I am nearing my 50th birthday and would like to watch the World Cup on site for the first time. This was very helpful.
